I think our awkwardness levels are pretty much just as normal as everywhere else.

Don't let this Viewpoints article discount Wooster. There are certainly enclaves of awkward people here, but normal students are in abundance. As Jonah suggested, scheduling a visit and watching people interact is probably the best way to get a fair sense of the general Wooster student.

(Just don't come Saturday morning, because we'll all be asleep.)

I think it should be noted that--if I remember correctly--it only cost $200,000 a year to keep Kittredge open. Most of the staff was retained and work at Lowry.

This would be an increase of roughly $100 per student.

To call it a massive tuition increase is not really fair.

However, I don't really mind Lowry food, though I miss Kitt's variety and roominess.

I think a lot of parts of Laney's editorial were meant in jest, but there is a certain ring of truth to it. What isn't really conveyed is that, really, when everyone is awkward, no one is, so even if we might sometimes look at ourselves and our peers and sense this perception, we aren't bothered by it - we make light of it and joke about it and not much more.

When it comes to your student, I cannot emphasize enough how great it is that you had a campus visit - and if your student hasn't had an overnight yet I would highly recommend it. The only way to get a feel for the atmosphere, the aesthetic and what the people are really like in day-to-day interactions is to come and live the student life for a little while. Judge for yourself whether people are awkward and, if so, whether it's a good awkwardness or a bad one. Wooster isn't the right fit for everyone, but I think the kids for whom it's the right place will know it after they visit.

As the parent of a prospective student, I was reading this piece during a campus visit and wondered if this is truly representative of student attitudes and behavior at Wooster.
Is this the result of several years of experience, or are you a freshman? Do you think the kind of place you came from makes a difference?
What else can you tell me about the atmosphere at COW (minus the sarcasm---I might not get it!)
I will welcome any insight you would like to offer.

Yes, it can be a challenge to personally come to terms with the world as we know it, and figure out how we ought to live in it for the overall benefit of society.

Surely declaring whole groups of people to be "stupid" is not helpful for making progress. It leads us to assume that the significant problems of the world are "someone else's" (those stupid people of course). It's blame-shifting; it allows us to avoid scrutinising our own responsibilities. It's dangerously smug.

I don't see any contradiction. All the opposite, somebody's wife belongs to a person as much as the truth to an individual. The truth stands by itself and exists regardless who is telling it. The truth and the wife don't belong to anybody; they can't be sold, traded, or exchanged, because BOTH ARE NOBODY'S PROPERTY.
I personally think that in most of Immortal Technique's songs, he states facts; and these facts don't belong to Immortal Technique in the same way that a woman doesn't belong to her husband. Your reasoning sounds like a poor term paper, if that is the case I may give you a C+ at the most.

And are you willing to take on the massive increase in tuition to fund the reopening of Kittredge, the further remodeling of Lowry, or "better quality" food? The Oak Grove is full of trees, but the last time I checked, money doesn't grow on any of them.

I have full confidence that the solutions for the world's challenges in the economical, political, environmental and technology spheres, lie with our youths.

Congrats to the GYC for engaging in a Youth for Youth initiative and we will support your endeavours in whatever way we can.

Kudos to your creative thinking and it was a pleasure meeting with two of your members a few weeks ago.

Congratulations to the members of the Global Youth Connection. This is an amazingly brilliant initiative which immediately conveys hope and promise to people
all over the world, but in particular the young entreprenuers. Many ideas have been stymied for want of funding, and many would-be entrepreneurs remain dormant for lack of information and encouragement.
Not any more....GYC brings hope. Certainly the world must be a better place with this type of leadership.
Thanks to the brilliant young minds.
