Our View on Lowry and C-Store

While the expanded hours of Mom’s since 2008 had been a welcome addition to students who were still hungry well past midnight, there were adverse effects as well. Too many students came in drunk, disorderly and disrespectful on Friday and Saturday nights, and customers often pocketed food from the convenience store. This contributed to long lines, which frustrated both customers and staff. In response, Campus Dining Services came up with a solution that has helped all parties. For this, they should be commended. Judicial board deserves more credit

By Alexandra DeGrandchamp

After three years as a member of the Voice staff, I value honesty in reporting. And as a hearing board member for the College’s Judicial Board, I value admitting to one’s mistakes.

Alexander Lans’s article in the Jan. 29 edition entitled “Judicial Board Needs Reevaluation” does not hold these same values. (more…)

Tragedy brings insight

By Marianne Sierocinski

One new text message: “Heyyy. I’ve been occupied for a while. My brother died today completely unexpectedly. He killed himself. I’m home for a couple of days. I’d like to talk l8r.”

I had to read the text message a few times before I could comprehend it. In some ways, I still have not. (more…)

The true economics of smoking

By Usman Gul

I have reason to believe that society as a whole detests smokers based on fallacious economic reasoning. In the words of a friend: “I don’t want my tax money to be allocated towards cleaning the lungs of some obese smoker.” This is the typical standpoint of nonsmokers against smokers. Bean-counting accountants will blithely agree with that logic and blindly support raising taxes on tobacco products; however, an economist has reason to disagree on multiple grounds. (more…)

While reading for class one day, it hit me: every single book I had read for classes this year has involved some sort of extreme brutality — neglect, child and domestic abuse, rape. As I pondered the implications of my various readings I began to realize that these explicit actions are everywhere — television, the Internet, books and even conversation. (more…)

Where were you when the lights came on?

If you’re like the majority of Wooster’s student body, family and friends, you were down at John P. Papp stadium — smashed in the bleachers, hovering outside the fenced area or crowded together and blocking the exits — to watch our first-ever night football game. The energy was tangible, and even when the opponents pulled ahead you could hear student-inspired chants and cheering. (more…)

Our View

It’s the end of the fifth week of classes and everyone has settled into the groove of the college lifestyle by now. You’re spending countless hours in the library, getting very little done. You’ve probably left your door open to visit with friends down the hall. You can’t even tell who the first-years are in Lowry anymore because they finally leave their backpacks at the table instead of toting them around.

You have been lured into a false sense of security. Sure, the only non-college students that would dream of eating in Lowry are prospective students and their parents — no real threat there. You need a working C.O.W. Card — or a friend — to gain access to Lowry, dormitories and even academic buildings after 4 p.m. We are so comfortable with the safety and friendliness of this campus that sometimes we forget about the big, bad real world just beyond the campus boundaries. While dancing along with the rest of The College of Wooster campus last week at the annual Party on the Green, there was one thing we could not help noticing: there was a smile on the faces of everyone who was in attendance. It was raining. It was muddy. It was a blast. Both RJD2 and Eli “Paperboy” Reed were phenomenal, both playing with passion and energy that resonated out onto the crowd with fervor. (more…)
