Black History Month ends with hope for future change

Only a little over a year since the historic election of the nation’s first African American president, the annual tradition of celebrating Black History Month continues to see great changes. Since 1976, the United States has recognized the month of February as a time to acknowledge and remember the contributions made by many famous African Americans throughout history. With February coming to a close, the 2010 black history month saw a monumental new beginning for one of the nation’s most important groups. (more…)

Super-fit provides a rigorous work-out for students

If you’re looking for a fun way to stay in shape on campus, head over to the P.E.C. “hotbox” on Monday and Wednesday nights at 6:15 for Superfit aerobics.  The class lasts only an hour and includes 20 minutes of cardio then specific workouts to target and tone certain parts of the body. (more…)

What does SGA do for Wooster students?

Several weeks ago, the College of Wooster Student Government Association held elections for the 2010 calendar year, filling the SGA seats with the students who will be representing the student body.

Abbey Smanik, ’11 will be leading the Student Government Association this year as President, and Hannah Haas, ’12 will be serving as Vice President. In the other Cabinet seats are Leah Inglis ’11 as secretary of Student Affairs, John McGovern ’12 as Secretary of Special Services for the spring semester and Josh Koch ’12 for the fall semester, Estancia Cota ’12 as Secretary of Cultural Affairs and Diversity, myself as secretary of Academic Affairs and David Simpson ’12 as Treasurer. SPORTS SMARTS Rivalry brings out best in both schools

When the Wooster men’s basketball team (14-1 NCAC, 19-5 overall) took on their arch-rival Wittenberg University (10-4, 18-5) last Saturday, the showdown was supposedly all but a formality. Wooster hadn’t lost a game in two months and was set to cruise to an undefeated regular season in conference play. When the Tigers rained on the Scots’ parade harder than the Great Flood of Noah’s Ark, they proved why this rivalry is the most intense in Div. III. (more…)

IS^4 shows set the standard for new worlds

Wooster to host Witt, renew rivalry

With wins this past week over Wabash College and Hiram College, the Wooster basketball team sewed up its sixth straight conference title and clinched home-court advantage throughout the NCAC Tournament. However, the Scots will have plenty to play for when the arch-rival, Wittenberg University Tigers visit the Timken Gymnasium to renew one of the fiercest rivalries in Div. III. (more…)

Student Artist Spotlight: Red Wire talks

One great thing about the Wooster music scene is how much variety there is. One group which exemplifies this trend is Red Wire.  Formed in September of 2008, this group of five seniors has an interesting, dynamic sound.

“I’d describe it as progressive rock,” said Ginny Kincaid ’10, who plays guitar and sings, “But it’s not, really.  I mean, we aim for like, high energy rock, but some of our songs are really complicated musically.  We have a lot of music theory going on, ‘cause we have a lot of really musical people.” (more…)

Visiting professor shares history of Northeast India

Rakhal Purkayastha, Visiting Fulbright Scholar Professor of History, presented a history of Northeast India to the campus community on Tuesday.

Considered to be one of the most politically divided areas of South Asia, Purkayastha kept students, faculty, and staff eager to learn more about a region of the world that is not often publicized. (more…)

Switch to new waste removal vendor brings changes

This past Wednesday Waste Management, Wooster’s new waste removal vendors, sent Major Account Representative Scott Colvin and Account Manager Dick Kuralt to give a presentation on the new waste removal processes at the College.

“We want to be more than just the people that pick up your waste,” said Colvin. “We want to establish a relationship with the school and help reduce its waste.” (more…)

Chem professor’s company receives $250,000 grant

ABS materials, the company founded by Associate Professor of Chemistry Paul Edmiston, has received a $250,000 venture grant from JumpStart, which is a Cleveland-based state-funded group that encourages the development of new Ohio technologies. The investment, which is part of a larger $2.4 million capital raise for ABS, will be used to hire additional chemists and increase production of water treatment and purification technologies based on the College’s patented Osorb molecule.
